Job Tips: Résumé Tips #4

Is writing your rèsumè driving you a little batty?

Unless you are referred or invited to apply for a job through networking, your résumé is the only way that an organization will know if you’re a good fit. With many organizations using Applicant Tracking Systems to screen applicants, it’s essential that you know how to make sure the system will pass your résumé on to an actual human.

For a step-by-step tutorial, watch “How to Tailor Your Resume to a Specific Job: Match Job Descriptions, Keywords, and ATS-Optimization” by Greg Langstaff. He says the keys are:

    1.    Understand Job Requirements: Analyze job postings to identify essential keywords, skills, duties, and software/tools.

2: Integrate Keywords: Use identified keywords naturally in your professional branding, skills, and bullet points.

-Align your title and summary closely with the job title.

    3.    Optimize Bullet Points: Tailor bullet points to showcase relevant achievements and skills.

-Add bolded titles (1-3 words) to emphasize key skills.

    4.    Avoid Mistakes: Never copy/paste job descriptions in white font.

-Avoid excessive keyword stuffing.

-Refrain from using functional resumes; stick to ATS-friendly formats.
