Job Tips: Interview Tips #3
It’s been such a pleasure to connect with new clients that I met during and after my TEDx Talk in Manila. Keep an eye out for the launch of my expanded menu of services in the next months! In the meantime, feel free to message me here if you’re looking for career guidance.
People ask me what the biggest no-no’s are for a job interview. “5 Dangerous Things to Avoid Saying In a Job Interview” by John Georgevich is a good start. See the whole video on my Padlet.
Here’s the basics according to Georgevich:
1. Don’t criticize your previous or current company and colleagues to avoid being seen as a complainer. Frame it as looking for new opportunities.
2. Don’t say “I’ll do anything” because it signals desperation. Instead, emphasize the value you’ll bring and be specific about what you are looking forward to doing in the new role.
3. Don’t give generic characteristics about yourself (e.g. “I’m a quick learner”). Instead, give stories and examples to show it.
4. Don’t say “I don’t know” or “I’ve never seen this before”. Instead, connect it to something you’ve done that’s similar to show some understanding.
5. Don’t ask basic questions about the company because it shows a lack of preparation. Instead, research the company in advance and ask specific and insightful questions about the company.
